The goliath grouper is one of the most charismatic and personable fish you will meet in South Florida.
They were all but wiped out by the 1990’s due to commercial and recreational fishing, but have made an incredible comeback.
In the late summer and early fall, they gather on shipwrecks to find a mate and draw divers from around the world to view their enormous aggregations. They are a favorite among divers due to their curious nature, and some may request gentle pets from people they have come to know. When people get too close to an unfamiliar grouper, they may emit a deep ‘boom’ to communicate their need for space.
There are unfortunately calls to reopen fisheries for these gentle giants, putting their population at risk again. We support the continued protection of these incredible animals as one of the most important (and adorable) apex predators on our Florida reefs.
